Ooty (Tamil Nadu), 2nd December 2025: Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd., India’s leading packaged drinking water company installed a fully automatic Water ATM at the iconic Ooty Boat House, a key tourist landmark in The Nilgiris. The ATM was inaugurated by Ms Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, IAS, the District Collector of The Nilgiris District Administration. The ATMs mark a significant step toward strengthening community access to clean and affordable drinking water.
The Water ATM is part of Bisleri’s ongoing efforts to enhance public drinking water infrastructure in the region. Following the installation at the Boat House, four more Water ATMs will be installed at RCTC, Mariyamman Kovil Street, Commercial Street and Shooting Spot in the next one week. These will serve residents, tourists, and daily wage earners by providing access to safe, affordable and hygienic drinking water.
At the inauguration, Mr. K. Ganesh, Director – Sustainability & Corporate Affairs, Bisleri International said, “Clean drinking water is a fundamental need. Our partnership with the District Administration of The Nilgiris enables us to deliver this essential service at a location that receives high footfalls from both residents and tourists. With women-led Self-Help Groups operating these units, the initiative not only strengthens public health but also empowers local communities through dignified livelihood opportunities.”
Ms Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, IAS, The District Collector of The Nilgiris District Administration added, “Ensuring safe drinking water for the public is a key priority for the district. The Water ATM installed at the Ooty Boat House will serve thousands of visitors every day, while also creating income opportunities for SHG women. We appreciate Bisleri International’s collaboration in bringing sustainable water access solutions to The Nilgiris.”
A unique highlight of this initiative is its women-led governance structure, wherein the Water ATMs will be fully managed and operated by women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), appointed and authorized by the Office of the District Collector. This approach not only ensures efficient on-ground management but also creates a sustainable livelihood avenue for local women. Each SHG operator will oversee daily transactions, maintain the unit, and provide monthly sales and operational updates to the District Administration and Bisleri. Only 2-litre Bisleri jars will be used in the ATM. All revenue generated from the Water ATM will be retained entirely by the SHG members, further strengthening their financial independence.
This initiative reinforces Bisleri International’s commitment to community welfare, sustainable access to clean drinking water, and the empowerment of women through meaningful livelihood opportunities. By integrating public support from the District Administration with a women-led operations model, the Water ATM creates a holistic system that benefits both the community and its local economy.
